Attila HARMATHY

Dr. Harmathy was elected Judge of the Constitutional Court by Parliament in December 1998.

A graduate of the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest (ELTE), he participated in a summer law course of Cambridge University in 1962 and finished four years of study at the University of International Comparative Law in Strasbourg between 1964 and 1967. He started working for the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1962 and taught Roman Law and afterwards Civil Law at the Faculty of Law of ELTE. He was appointed senior lecturer in 1974 and then granted full professorship in 1982. Between October 1990 and November 1993 he was Dean of the Faculty. He was elected associate member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in May 1993 and ordinary member thereof in 1998. Between 1993 and 1995 he worked as Deputy Secretary General, then between 1996 and 1999 as Vice-President of the same institution. His academic work has been carried out in the field of Civil Law and has focused mainly on contracts. He has been Vice-President of the International Academy of Comparative Law since 1998. He received his candidate’s degree in 1972 and was awarded the title of Doctor of Science in 1981 for his thesis on the interrelations of contracts, public administration and economic management.
