He began to study law at Bólyai University in Kolozsvár, and graduated from the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest in 1953. From 1953 he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and later he became Head of the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology. He received an academic doctoral degree in Law in 1978 for his academic work in the field of criminology and criminal sociology. Chairman of the Hungarian Criminology Society and of the Hungarian Association for the Protection of Minorities, he is also full professor at the Faculty of Law of József Attila University in Szeged.
